For when you want a Lexus, but are too poor.
I think this design has aged really well, sure, it’s like a big Camry, but it works.

It also has 3 screens.

I would say, “for when you want a Buick, but you don’t really want a Buick."

LUXURY

Or, for when you need a new car, but are baller and comfortable enough to be seen in a Toyota.

I test drove one in January and didn't like it that much

Also. The dash is fantastic. And the ride quality is so good.

It seems to say, “Look who has come crawling back to the bargain luxury! Step aside, poors. Hehehehehe.”

I always really loved that dashboard. It was way ahead of its time (see the screen layout of the new s class).

Buy the right one, take care of it, and it will outlive you. Or LS400, or Camry 4 cylinder. Don’t buy the V6 Camry - water pump is buried and costs a lot to change.

Avalon is better than Lexes

I actually have a lot of respect for the Avalon. It’s for folks who can afford a nice car, but don’t need absolutely anyone to know it. It is literally nothing but comfort and reliability, and that’s awesome, in its own way. Somehow, it manages to be nearly indistinguishable from a Camry, yet appreciably better looking than a Camry at the same time.
Toyota has also always seemed to take a bigger risk on the Avalon’s interior than the exterior would lead someone to believe, and I kind of like it.

Good first car too, lots of kids at my school have them.

The second generation of Avalon has really grown on me, especially models with these chunky five-spoke wheels (which, come to think of it, were also available on the contemporary ES300). No one will mistake the Avalon for a Mercedes-Benz, but these wheels add some gravitas.

That moment when you’re too poor for a poor man’s Lexus but you can afford the Lexus sibling.

I can't recall the last time I saw someone under 60 driving one of these.

Gee, what’s with those headlights? It looks so concerned. We never got this generation.
